San Francisco Friends School, an independent K-8 Quaker school, was founded in 2002 by educators, civic leaders, business people, parents and graduates of Friends schools who felt the need for a Quaker school in San Francisco. In its first year, the school opened its doors to forty kindergartners and has grown ten-fold since. In 2008, the school moved into its permanent home in the beautifully refurbished Levi Strauss building located in the Mission neighborhood of San Francisco.

Each year of school's growth has been marked by significant milestones including curriculum and program development, accreditation by the Friends Council on Education and the California Association of Independent Schools, successful fund-raising campaigns and building projects, neighborhood partnerships and service-learning initiatives, sustained teacher professional development and enthusiastic parent volunteerism. Today, those kindergartners who entered the school in 2002 are in high schools across the city and Friends has become an established member of the San Francisco independent school community.
